In
the 1990's, Rhino Records partnered with Billboard Magazine (the music industry's
leading journal) to produce a long series of brief, budget-priced discs of
generally excellent music. Most consisted,
by definition, exclusively of top hits. Billboard
Rock 'n' Roll Christmas (1994) ventured farther afield and, in the process, created
one of the best collections of its sort. I banished it from my Top 20 Albums list
due to the unfortunate inclusion of Weird Al Yankovic's hideous "Christmas At Ground Zero," but
every other song approaches or achieves greatness. It's a mixed bag, but a it's a groovy bag. (Consumer
alert: like Rhino's other Billboard collections, Rock
'N' Roll Christmas has just ten tracks. The series includes Greatest
Christmas Hits 1935-1954, Greatest
Christmas Hits 1955-Present, Greatest
R'n'B Christmas Hits, and Greatest
Country Christmas Hits.)
