An adjunct to Hot
Rod Rock, a CD series sponsored by Hot
Rod magazine, Hot
Rod Holiday (1997) mainly includes songs from the
rich catalog of Capital Records - home to the Beach
Boys, the Ventures, and other artists popular with
grease monkeys and the ladies who love them. The disc
has a high quotient of great songs but a few nagging
problems. First, only one song, the Beach Boys' "Little
Saint Nick," is actually about a car.
Second, while at least one cut is very hard-to-find
(Gary U.S. Bonds' "Call Me For Christmas"),
serious collectors will already own most of these sixteen
tracks. Finally, the Dion and Fats Domino tracks included
here were cut in 1993, not in the artists' respective
heydays. But, while I quibble (guys like me always
do), most consumers will enjoy the hell out of Hot
Rod Holiday. Gentlemen, start your engines!
