Notes
A
Woman's Got the Power (The
A's, 1981)
Back
when the A's - a new wave
outfit from Philadelphia
fronted by spastic, hyperactive
singer Richard Bush - first
surfaced, the reviews of
their self-titled Arista
debut album were tepid at
best. Blessed with precious
little cash, I passed. Years
later, I finally got a chance
to hear this song, the title
track from their overwrought
sophomore effort - and their
sole (if minor) hit (#106
pop). Oddly, "A
Woman's Got The Power" sounds
far closer to late 60's soul
than early 80's new wave.
Over a driving beat and swelling
strings (er, synthesizers),
Bush declaims loudly (and
convincingly) on the comparative
strengths of the sexes. Not
big surprise, then, that
a handful of gen-u-wine black
people (Clarence
Clemmons, Jennifer
Holliday,
even soul legend James
Carr)
have covered the song over
the years.
